Altar servers assist the priest during the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass. Being an altar server is a great opportunity for Catholic boys and girls in our grouping to serve God and His Church.
From the early church to the present time, whenever the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass was offered, there was someone to assist the priest, to prepare the altar, light the candles, make the responses, hold the book, present the water and wine, wash the priest's fingers and put everything away after Mass.
Interested youth can begin serving in fourth grade and may continue into their high school years.
New altar servers will be trained and when their training is complete, each new server will be paired with an experienced server initially to help them become comfortable with their duties. For information about becoming an altar server or to learn about becoming an MC for the liturgy (which requires engaging in more preparation, being at least high school age, and taking on a bigger responsibility in the liturgy), please contact Deacon Tim Killmeyer.
Did you know that Pope Leo XIV was an altar server? He actually started when he was about 6 years old. We ask that our servers begin when they are in the 4th grade or above and many continue all the way through high school. An important part of our liturgical celebrations, this is a great way for Catholic boys and girls to serve God and his church. In addition, serving at the altar teaches spiritual reverence, discipline, and responsibility. It fosters a deeper connection to their faith, develops valuable life skills, such as punctuality and teamwork, and encourages service to the church community. It can also inspire leadership, provide opportunities for friendship, and increase their understanding of the Mass. Many use it as an opportunity for the service hours they need for school.
We will be training new servers in grades 4-12 in October. Students can choose one date during Session 1 and one date during Session 2; they must attend two days of training total. All sessions will take place at Holy Trinity Church, though the actions will be the same at all three churches.
